If there’s one thing Ericson Coney proved at this year’s regional tournament, it’s that rankings don’t define a wrestler—heart does.

Coming into the weekend as the 12-seed at 138 pounds, the Everglades High School freshman wasn’t high on anyone’s radar. After all, he had moved up weight classes this season and had been overlooked for most of the year. But Coney didn’t just qualify for states—he dominated his way there, making a statement in every match.

With three pins, the most in the 138-pound weight class and the most by any freshman in the tournament, Coney wasted no time securing his victories. He went from being the 12-seed to finishing 3rd, making the largest seed-to-placement jump in his bracket and one of the biggest across the entire tournament.

Not only is he heading to states for the second year in a row, but he’s doing it as the sole qualifier from his team. That’s no small feat, especially for a freshman competing against upperclassmen in one of the toughest brackets.

Coney has shown time and time again that he thrives under pressure, and with states right around the corner, he’ll have another chance to prove why he belongs among Florida’s best. Underrate him at your own risk.
